Proverbs 26:11

More Broken Promises, More Attacks

As documented most fully here, the perplexing pattern of going on the offense, issuing a pseudo-apology for offense, promising to change course, and then totally reversing course and going back to more offenses - continues unabated at Sungenis’ organization, BTF.

In January, 2008, Sungenis made the following promise:

Sungenis: “Because such political, cultural and social criticism of the Jews can so easily be misunderstood, I have decided to refrain from any more dealings with those aspects of Jewish life. I’ll leave criticism of Jewish politics and culture to people more capable than I apparently am. My expertise is in theology, and that is where I will put all my efforts. Hence, any future dealings that I have with the Jews, whether on our website or in published articles, will only concern the theological side of things. As you can see by the Jewish material presently on our website, every article is about theological matters, and that will always be the policy of our apostolate from here on out… I will not be expressing those (Jewish, non-theological) opinions in my speeches, articles, website or any other public venue. Again, I will only be expressing my thoughts in public that deal with the theological dimensions, as our apostolate has done for the past several months. ” (January 25, 2008)

If one reads Sungenis’ entire statement, one will note a complete lack of reference to anyone at RSATJ or Sungenis’ bishop, the Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades. Sungenis’ promise here emanated from his own personal discernment. Of course, if one has followed Sungenis’ affairs, a remarkably similar statement issued by Sungenis in the fall of 2006 will likely come to mind - Sungenis “Open Letter” (which can be found here)

And just as Sungenis broke his promises in 2006, he has done so in 2008. At present, there are many entries at BTF that violate Sungenis’ promise to stick solely to theological issues. And even when an issue is primarily theological in nature, Sungenis’ animus against Jews is still readily apparent.

Sungenis’ continuing anti-Jewish course only further validates Bishop Rhoades’ wisdom in directing Sungenis to stop writing about all Jewish issues and further underscores that the problem has never been about the dual covenant error. That argument is and has always been a canard.

The first example of such promise-breaking, Jim Condit Warns of ABC’s “Jesus, Mary and DaVinci" – the opening sentence of which is “Top Media Jews Commit This Year's Holy Week Atrocity” - dredges up some of the very same anti-Semites that first created problems for Sungenis back in 2002 (as documented by Dr. Bill Cork and a number of others here ). One will find familiar names like Dilling, Hoffman, Pranaitis and Piper in this article now posted at Sungenis’ site.

Additionally, in this article, one will find the interesting claim that "The Talmud, or at least most of it, was developed...about 200 BC when the Rabbis and Pharisees who rejected Christianity started to put together their own man-made defense of their now superceded religion." How the "Rabbis and Pharisees" began opposing Christianity 200 years before Christ was born is left unexplained. Perhaps Condit was simply confused between "AD" and "BC".

Then we have Bob’s review of The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit, in which (among other things), we experience the déjà vu of another misleading and false "quote" intended to prove the Jewish make-up of a purported political cabal. This time, conservative columnist David Brooks is the victim (article).

Next is the article Overlooked Millions: Non-Jewish Victims of the Holocaust, which - in an an eery echo of a statement Sungenis made soon before Michael Forrest quit CAI - informs us that the claims of "millions" of deaths in the concentration camps are "highly exaggerated." (p. 12)

And in Q&A #76, we read the following:

Questioner: I was wondering if someone could tell me how accurate Texe Marrs' claims are about Jewish world domination in his video 'The Power of Prophecy'

Sungenis: …his material seems to be factual and his analysis fairly accurate, at least when it comes to Jewish issues. Unlike most commentators today, Marrs is unafraid to tell the negative side on Jewish matters.

For those who have followed Sungenis' anti-Jewish crusade, the name Texe Marrs may ring a bell. In fact, Bob gave an infamous radio interview - the one in which he posited that Jews sent in Monica Lewinsky to take down President Clinton - at a station that features Marrs and other interesting characters. Some of the "interesting" titles to be found at Marrs' website are:

Slaves of Zion—America Has Become a Jewish Colony
Now We Are All Toiling on the Zionist USA Slave Plantation
9-11 Evil—Israel's Central Role in the Sept. 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks
All Hail the Jewish Master Race
The Synagogue of Satan: The Secret History of Jewish World Domination.

One will also discover such anti-Catholic titles as:

Vatican Rising: The Seduction of Christianity and the Triumph of Rome
The Vatican Terminator
The Pope, the Devil and the Masonic Lodge
Is The Pope Catholic?—Shocking Revelations About the World's Most Powerful Religious Leader
Vatican Rising—The Seduction of Christianity and the Triumph of Rome

In The Vatican Terminator, we read:

Satan has chosen a new Pope. This new, chosen vessel will not only inherit the ecumenical legacy of the aging and increasingly frail Pope John Paul II, he will be endowed with the occult energies to found and organize a stunning New World Religion.

In the ad for Vatican Rising we read:

Triumphantly, the Pope is adored by multitudes who tout him as their "Holy Father." He occupies a regal throne and claims to speak for God. Some believe he is God! So, what now? Are hidden supernatural powers about to be unleashed that will magnify the Pope and crown him Lord of all?

Yet, disturbingly, Bob is completely unfazed by Marrs' anti-Catholicism, even going so far as to excuse it. Bob writes:

Marrs, of course, does have his issues with the Catholic Church, but who doesn't? Many leaders in the Catholic Church today are complicit with the negative material Marrs uncovers. (source)

Even Protestant apologist James White has described Marrs as a "true anti-Catholic." Ironically, after accusing others of having greater "allegiances" to Jewish causes than the Catholic faith, it appears that Bob has greater allegiances to his fellow anti-Jewish conspiracy theorists than he does to the Catholic faith. What does it matter if Marrs is out and about teaching that the Holy Father is Satan's chosen one? Marrs understands the problem with Jews!

Another extreme example at BTF is Bob’s friend and perhaps most vocal supporter, Edgar Suter. An extended screed that is representative of Suter's writing can be found in the January, 2008 issue of Culture Wars (pp 2-4). In this letter, Suter expresses his aspiration that a future Pope will exhume John Paul II's corpse, cut off his fingers, and throw his mutilated body into the Tiber River. Ben Douglass has also confirmed that Suter was a source of blatantly anti-Semitic material posted CAI/BTF, such as that from the white-supremacist National Vanguard. Suter can also be seen on BTF's current Q and A board (here and here) referencing the "pedagogy of deceit of the Rabbis" and putting scare quotes around the word "Jews." This is the way anti-Semites convey their belief in a thoroughly debunked extremist theory that the Jewish people of today are not actually Jewish at all, they are ethnic pretenders.

More to the case at hand, Suter recently wrote the following in reaction to the Holy Father's alteration of the Good Friday prayer:

Thank you for the sad news.

Certainly the synagogue of Satan is quite experienced in the combined arts of shadow play and managed opposition. Of course Foxman will not be truly happy unless the Noachide Laws can be enforced so that we "idolators" who worship "that man" will be liable for execution. I find no satisfaction that Foxman is not yet in a position to ensure that "the best of the Gentiles should all be killed."...

As for those impostors "who say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie," Jesus was quite clear about their parentage at John 8:44, was He not? Abraham and Moses, but not the sons of the devil, are my elder brothers.

Edgar
(email of February 7, 2008)

Even Fr. Brian Harrison, who has recently come publicly to Bob’s defense, described Suter’s rant as “totally paranoid” and “crazy” (email of February 7, 2008). Father Harrison later characterized Suter as one of the “real anti-Semitic Catholics….brimming with hostility and suspicion against everything Jewish” (email of March 6, 2008). Yet Bob cannot even manage to distance himself from Suter.

Another pertinent Q and A on Jewish issues currently at BTF is #44. Below is the last section of the entry:

The goals [of the] Christ Crucifiers has [sic] been for hundreds of years 1) Get the deicide crime abolished. 2) Get the Old Covenant to be still valid for them by the Vatican. 3) Get the Noahide Laws established worldwide by placing 5th columns in the 5 great religions of the world.

And what was Sungenis' response? In response to his patron’s slander of modern Jews as "Christ Crucifiers," one might hope Sungenis would at least quote Nostra Aetate #4: "what happened in His passion cannot be charged against all the Jews, without distinction, then alive, nor against the Jews of today."

Maybe he would even quote another passage: "this sacred synod wants to foster and recommend that mutual understanding and respect which is the fruit, above all, of biblical and theological studies as well as of fraternal dialogues."

Perhaps he might even have gone as far as to fraternally admonish his patron for regurgitating the kind of anti-Jewish conspiracy theories that he himself had finally promised to swear off.

Unfortunately, Sungenis chose none of the above. Instead, he replied:

R. Sungenis: And that's why we are here to preach the true Gospel of Jesus Christ- in order to rebut these false ideas.

And thus he confirmed his patron's "wisdom" and the continuing purpose of CAI-BTF.

Of course, then we have the following excerpt from Sungenis’ recent review of E. Michael Jones’ latest book, which Sungenis remarkably praised as “like a sequel to the Bible”:

" Jones,...makes an indelible impression upon our minds as he adds two millennia of documented facts and figures onto St. Paul's final and sobering assessment of the Jews: 'the Jews, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us; they do not please God, and are opposed to everyone, trying to prevent us from speaking to the Gentiles that they may be saved, thus constantly filling up the measure of their sins' (1 Thessalonians 2:15-16)....All his facts and figures are for the purpose of showing us that St. John's label of godless Jews as the 'synagogue of Satan,' the spirit of Antichrist, is not only alive and well today but has almost completely overwhelmed our modern society, thus serving as a public omen to the world that the Apocalypse has, indeed, come upon us, in full and furious force" (article).

Certainly, this contemporary, broad-brush condemnation of the Jewish people also seems to run directly contrary to Nostra Aetate’s teaching that, "what happened in His passion cannot be charged against all the Jews, without distinction, then alive, nor against the Jews of today." (#4)

Very recently, Sungenis has added a “news alert” bewailing the fact Amazon.com has refused to sell the latest book written by his colleague and source of Jewish information, Michael Hoffman II. Hoffman, of course, is a notorious Holocaust “Revisionist” and conspiracy theorist who also believes the debunked, extremist theory that today’s Jews are ethnic pretenders. He is the same man who disgustingly defamed Sungenis’ bishop as a “fag” without receiving a single word of rebuke from Sungenis (article). Yet, Sungenis is concerned enough about Michael Hoffman II’s book sales to put up a “news alert” for him.

Next, we have Sungenis’ “response” to Mark Shea in which he makes the following eye-opening comments:

“"it's time for people to wake up and stop being corralled by the Jewish slave masters" (p. 10).

He suggested that Bishop Rhoades is paying “homage” to the Jews “because they own the mortgages on the Catholic buildings erected in his and other Catholic dioceses.” (p. 10)

There are the following “news alerts” at BTF as well:

Chris Matthews: Presidential Election Should Not Be about Israel

Vatican Officials Excise Scriptures to Accommodate Jews

Orthodox Jews Burn the New Testament

Einstein Letter Disses God, the Bible and Religion

Now, some of the information in these articles may be true, of course. But that is not the point. Sungenis promised he would no longer address Jewish issues unless they were actually theological. Again, his most recent of several broken promises, as of January 2008 was:

“I have decided to refrain from any more dealings with those aspects of Jewish life. I’ll leave criticism of Jewish politics and culture to people more capable than I apparently am. My expertise is in theology, and that is where I will put all my efforts. Hence, any future dealings that I have with the Jews, whether on our website or in published articles, will only concern the theological side of things. As you can see by the Jewish material presently on our website, every article is about theological matters, and that will always be the policy of our apostolate from here on out.”

Most recently, we have the newest “article review” at BTF: Georgia, Israel and the Future. In the second half of Sungenis’ review he puts an extended “plug” in for a book about a conspiracy theory involving Fatima and ends with this:

The conflict in Georgia has more to it than meets the eye. By and large, Georgia is a Jewish stronghold, politically and economically. It just so happens that the Jews and their friends in Georgia were persecuting and killing Christians. But the province in Georgia had a pact with Russia that if such an attack would occur, Russia would come to its defense, which is precisely what happened. Of course, the Neocon-dominated USA portrays it only as an instance of Russian aggression, and tries to make Russia look like an international pariah, just as it has done with Iran of late. In reality, Georgia is just another conflict between Jews and Christians, a dimension of the conflict that is systematically glossed over by the news media.

Sungenis then provided links to articles in case one wanted even more about what he described as “the political intrigue.” Theology, indeed. Of course, Sungenis does not inform his readers that there are merely an estimated 13,000 Jews in all of Georgia and that Georgia is comprised by and large of Orthodox Christians.

And finally, we have the following Q & A. While the issues involved are indeed theological, the problem is that Sungenis managed to take an innocuous question about No Salvation Outside the Church (EENS) – one that does not even mention Jews – and answered it with an extended criticism that singles out “the Jews”.

Contrary to Fr. Harrison's recent complaint, no one is attempting to read Robert Sungenis’ heart. To paraphrase St. James, Sungenis’ works (and words) speak clearly for themselves. He has broken his latest promise to refrain from addressing non-theological matters involving the Jewish people. And even when he does address issues of a theological nature, he continues to misuse theology in order to push his personal, anti-Jewish agenda (click here for additional proof).

Sungenis has repeatedly made it clear that the reason for any scaling back in his attacks upon the Jewish people is due simply to the same pragmatic considerations he has previously offered in years past - “because my intentions could very easily be misunderstood,” for the sake of “peace”, and “to calm some of the storm.” (Although, upon viewing the number of items about Jews on his home page as of late, it is difficult to notice any real scaling back at all.) These are his own public words and they are entirely in keeping with the long-standing pattern he has followed since 2002 (article).

January, 2008:

Sungenis: “I can also understand how and why, when my quotes are isolated and placed in this video (a video of some of Sungenis’ statements about Jews), people who view it would react negatively…My intentions could be very easily misunderstood, and the potentiality of that is very high. Hence, because such political, cultural and social criticism of the Jews can so easily be misunderstood, I have decided to refrain from any more dealings with those aspects of Jewish life.”

Sungenis: “Whether right or wrong, I took them down so there could be peace between me and my Jewish opponents.”

Response to P. Catan

February 2008:

Sungenis: “I did decide to calm some of the storm by removing Jewish articles from my website…”
(Article)

Of course, it would be very interesting to see Sungenis finally explain how he was simply “misunderstood” when writing that Jews have “infected our Catholic Church" or when making the numerous other statements documented here.

One will search in vain to find a true, unadulterated expression of remorse, personal fault or change of heart. To the contrary, Sungenis has repeatedly made it clear that “no one” will change his mind about “the Jews” or that while he may partially refrain from saying so in public, he still believes these things about them “in my personal thoughts.”

Please carefully review the important statements Sungenis has made, below:

Sungenis: “I am not coming to you asking you to remove your website [RSATJ] as if I have relinquished these beliefs about the Jewish people…I am coming to you saying that I am no longer advertising them, and you should reciprocate by taking down your website that rebuts them. If you don't take it down…I will resume putting up Jewish articles on my site and I will revise and expand each one of them . . . As to the retraction in 2002, yes, I did it for "peace," because I still believed most of the things I wrote…Neither you nor anyone else is going to get me to change my mind about the Jews, Israel, Judaism and even Roy Schoeman…. I am here simply to make a deal with you.” (e-mail of 28 Aug 2007).

Sungenis: “"Neither you nor anyone else is going to get me to change my mind about the Jews, Israel, Judaism and even Roy Schoeman. What I'm telling you is, I will refrain from addressing it if you take down your website. I've said my piece and could easily move on.” (email of Aug. 28, 2007)

Sungenis: “Although some of the material in those [anti-Jewish] quotes I will reserve the right to hold and believe in my personal thoughts because I believe the material to be factual, nevertheless, I will not be expressing those opinions in my speeches, articles, website or any other public venue. " (BTF Q &A of 25 Jan 2008).

Sungenis’ own words are clear. He still personally holds to his offensive, prejudiced views of the Jewish people. He insists on his right to express them publicly when and where he deems fit - while apparently hoping that no one will notice or care that he has repeatedly promised to stop.

And so, when all of the verbiage is whittled down to the essentials, what does Sungenis actually offer all those he has offended, scandalized, confused, slandered and otherwise maligned over the past 6 years in order to obtain their pardon? Yet another promise – a promise he has already broken - that he will refrain from expressing at least some of his most offensive opinions with the kind of frequency we’ve seen over the past 6 years – because he has merely been “misunderstood” and for the sake of “peace”.

On the first attempt (back in 2002) many people – including the writers at RSATJ - were inclined to overlook the serious shortcomings of Sungenis’ apologies in the hope that a small seed of regret might eventually grow into full-blown repentance. But after the second, third and fourth deficient attempts, a very old saying comes to mind: “Fool me once - shame on you. Fool me twice (thrice, four times?) – shame on me.”

An Open Invitation to Bob Sungenis

A few months ago, Bob Sungenis stated that he had “publically
disavowed" and "apologized for” his problematic statements about the Jewish people. And Fr. Brian Harrison has just recently claimed that Bob has truly apologized for and retracted at least a good many of his statements about Jews. However, as has been documented
here and here (see “disavow”), these claims are not accurate. Additionally, Bob has previously made statements that initially appear to be authentic apologies and retractions only to then reverse himself. In the past, he has stated that his apologies have been “misunderstood.” He has stated that he “stands by” all of the material he posted. He has also blamed his critics for "forcing" him to go back on his partial-apologies and promises.

As such, we would like to give Bob an opportunity to make the record clear. He stated the following to Michael Forrest:

“I am not coming to you asking you to remove your website [RSATJ] as if I have relinquished these beliefs about the Jewish people…I am coming to you saying that I am no longer advertising them, and you should reciprocate by taking down your website that rebuts them. If you don't take it down, then you will force me to take the appropriate counter-action. For instance, I will resume putting up Jewish articles on my site and I will revise and expand each one of them . . . As to the retraction in 2002, yes, I did it for "peace," because I still believed most of the things I wrote…Neither you nor anyone else is going to get me to change my mind about the Jews, Israel, Judaism and even Roy Schoeman. “ (e-mail of 6 Aug 2007).

And in 2008 at his Bellarmine Forum, Bob confirmed that he still holds to some of the views expressed below. He has also made new problematic statements since his January 2008 promise to stop attacking Jews (
article).

As Bob has made the following statements publicly, we believe it is likewise incumbent upon him to indicate clearly and publicly which statements he retracts and apologizes for and which ones he does not. Certainly, some of the following sentiments and statements are considerably more problematic than others. However, taken as a whole, these statements and sentiments convey something significant as well.

Again, as there has been some confusion regarding previous “apologies” and “retractions”, two clarifications are in order:

A) In the past, Sungenis has apologized only for “upsetting” people or for the sake of “peace.” We are asking Sungenis specifically if he apologizes for each statement below because he acknowledges that it was inappropriate, dubious and/or erroneous and therefore should not have been made.

B) Sungenis has also inaccurately used the words “retract” and “disavow” in the past (scroll down to “
disavow” ). As such, for the purposes of this open invitation, we will be following the standard definition of “retract.”

Retract: to revoke a statement or opinion as inaccurate or unjustified.

For each quote below, all Bob need do is state whether he retracts it or not and whether he apologizes for it or not. If Bob retracts and apologizes for
all of the statements he made below, he may simply state that, rather than responding to each individual quote.

We sincerely hope Bob decides to make clear where he stands. Additionally, we will gladly remove the material presently at this blog and at the SATJ website if Bob forthrightly retracts and apologizes for the statements made below (click
here to view new, problematic material posted at BTF).

Sungenis’ Statements:

1) “It’s time for people to wake up and stop being corralled by the Jewish slave masters.” (May 2008)

2) “How is it that the Jews have garnered such a market on suffering that Bishop Rhoades finds it necessary to pay homage to them? Is it because they own the mortgages on the Catholic buildings erected in his and other dioceses?” (May 2008)

3) "the Jewish element has so infected our Catholic Church today that they have turned Catholics into Jewish apologists. The infection of Judaism and Zionism has become the number one enemy for us."

4) "it is becoming increasingly difficult to believe that six million Jews were killed in Nazi internment camps." (Oct. 2009)

5) “I suggest you read the unsanitized accounts of what really happened [in the Holocaust]. When the Jews and Jewish sympathizers start showing proof that the Nazis killed 6 million Jews by gassing them, instead of jailing people for even bringing up the question, then you can talk about the Nazis and I’ll listen.” (Sept. 2009)

6) “The Red Cross documents in verifiable records at anyone’s disposal that there were only a few hundred thousand Jews who lost their lives in the German camps, and most of those were due to disease.” (Sept. 2009) (Click here to see a refutation of this claim often made by Holocaust deniers and "revisionists".)

7) "One example of this evidence is the fact that the worldwide Jewish population from 1940 to 1948 did not decrease by even a half million, much less six million....But the international population records show that the numbers of Jews after World War II were virtually the same as before the war." (Oct. 2009) (Click here to see a refutation of this claim often made by Holocaust deniers and "revisionists".)

8) "The documented records of the International Red Cross show that there were less than a few hundred thousand Jews who died in Nazi camps, and that most of those were from disease." (Oct. 2009) (Click here to see a refutation of this claim often made by Holocaust deniers and "revisionists". According to the International Committee of the Red Cross itself, this is not what these records "show.")

9) “The charge of 'anti-Semitism' is nothing but a clever ploy…
Albert Einstein finally recognized after dealing with his own people:

'Anti-Semitism is nothing but the antagonistic attitude produced in the non-Jew by the Jewish group. The Jewish group has thrived on oppression and on the antagonism it has forever met in the world…the root cause is their use of enemies they create to keep solidarity.'” (Click
here for the facts about this fraudulent quote that Bob attributed to Einstein).

10) “it is no secret to the well-informed that it is the goal of world politics and finance,
which is run in large part by wealthy Jews behind the scenes, to secure the Middle East for Israel.”

11) “Other Catholic organizations are also becoming fronts for Zionism. Catholic Answers in San Diego and the Eternal World Television Network seem to be the two mainstays.”

12) “I have my doubts that it was 6 million [Jews killed in the Holocaust], but even if it was 1 million, still, the point remains that they were a marked race by the Nazis.
Hitler hated the Jews, not only for what he saw as a youth, but because the Jews had a stranglehold on European finance and banking for many years.
There are some stories, however, that suggest these Jewish banking familes actually helped Hitler in his quest, since their objective was to ellicit world-
wide sympathy so as to migrate European and Russian Jews to Palestine, their long-sought goal which they have, indeed, accomplished.”

13) "the figure of six million Jews dying under Hitler's regime is even admitted by informed Jews to be mere propaganda."

14) “A telltale sign in the movie industry of the shift in mores was demonstrated no better than in the Walt Disney Corporation. Founder Walter Disney was well-known in the 50s and 60s
for wholesome family entertainment. Interestingly enough, Walt had a policy of not hiring Jewish people.”

15) “We also know through the exhaustive effort of Michael Collins Piper’s new 738- page book, Final Judgment, how Bronfman (note: a Jew) is implicated in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The story begins when Kennedy refused to capitulate to Israel’s demand for nuclear weapons, and you can probably guess the rest of the story.”

16) “President Roosevelt had a part in (the Zionist conspiracy) himself. Being of Jewish ancestry, he was sympathetic to their cause...Roosevelt brought America into World War II by allowing Pearl Harbor to take place, for he had known way in advance that the Japanese were planning to attack.”

17) “Christianity is certainly not inherently violent, but unfortunately,
Judaism tends to be, because real Judaism considers all non-Jews goyim that are less than animals, and this precipitates a loathing and violence against non-Jews.”

18) "The Jews...do intend to rule the world. And now the problem is that they want to rule the Catholic Church, too."

19) "Are the Protocols (of the Elders of Zion) forged? I don’t know. What I do know is that there is a lot of reason to believe that there are certain people, yes, the Jews, who would like us all to believe that they are forged."

20) "as long as [my critics] hold to the Jewish racist heresies of Roy Schoeman and refuse to condemn the USCCB and other hierarchy for their capitulation to the Jews, then they will never be my friends, they will be my enemies. God will be the judge of who of us has been right."

21) "You know, the thing about Bill Clinton was, you know, he tried to secure this peace accord between Israel and the Arabs and wasn't successful with that, and he did some other things that the Jews didn't like, because he got some power under him and he thought he could, you know, do whatever he wanted and then they, you know, they sent Monica Lewinski in there after him, you know, and brought him down."

22) "The Jews are godless and getting more ungodly with each passing day."

23) “I am merely doing the same thing Jesus did when he confronted the sins of the Jews…Unfortunately, the Jews haven’t
changed in our day. They are still the same godless racists they were in Jesus’ day. Few of them have repented of their sins.”

24) “The nation of Israel has control of AMDOCS, the central telephone operation in the United States. It's one way the Mossad spies on American citizens, including you and those you talk to."

25) “Do I need to say more? I have the whole history of Catholicism behind me, and these Fathers, Doctors, Saints and the God-Man himself said much worse things about the Jews than I ever have. What is really happening today folks is that we have been taken over by Jewish propaganda, and there are a few Catholic/Jewish
ideologues…Many of them are paid handsomely by Zionist groups to say whatever they can to silence people like me. They are bent on promoting the godless state of Israel for some pie-in-the-sky dream they have, even against their own Catholic religion (at least that’s the religion they claim to have), and they will smear anyone who gets in their way.
The Jews have done this for centuries against good people, and it continues today.”

26) "95% of the Jews today still despise Jesus Christ.”

27) "The whole tenor of the New Testament is that God is finally rejecting the Jews (except for a remnant)...God is giving up on the Jews. In the language of John 6:44, God is no longer going to draw them to Jesus.
In fact, God will become active in keeping them in unbelief by blinding
them to the truth (Romans 11:8). That is the kind of God we have; a
very dynamic God...and the Jews will die in their unbelief."

28) “when (Jews) come into power…they can be some of the
most ruthless people on the face of the earth."

29) " Jones,...makes an indelible impression upon our minds as he adds two millennia of documented facts and figures onto St. John's label of godless Jews as the 'synagogue of Satan,' the spirit of Antichrist, is not only alive and well today but has almost completely overwhelmed our modern society, thus serving as a public omen to the world that the Apocalypse has, indeed, come upon us, in full and furious force"

30) "...I tell you, with the rest of the voice from the tradition of the Church, that the Jews will seek to take over and/or thoroughly weaken the Catholic religion, and perhaps someday be strong enough to place one of their own as its leader."

31) "every place that [the Jews] have been throughout history, they have been excised. Because they do the same thing every time they go in there, they try to take over places that they go to! And every time they do, people get wise to it, just like we're doing now, and they get themselves into trouble. And then they wonder why they're so persecuted, and vagabonds across the face of the earth for the last 2,000 years -- well, this is why!"

32) “I suggest you stop blaming it on the nation who excised [the Jews] and start looking at what the Jewish people do to get themselves excised…go read the Old Testament and find out who you are dealing with.” (Sept. 2009)

33) “As for Germany’s relationship with the Jews, well, the Germans treated the Jews very nicely when the Jews were excised out of Russia and migrated to Germany. Then the Jews turned on the Germans because they got a better deal from someone else.” (Sept. 2009)

34) “Whether [David Palm, Michael Forrest and Jacob Michael] have ethnic ties to the Jews, I don’t know, but I suspect that one or more of them do but they are not admitting it.”

35) “Go read the newspapers. There’s enough damning information about the Jewish influence and incursion into the Catholic Church just in the last two years to show I’m on the right track. The real problem is that there isn’t one courageous Catholic apologist in America that is willing to take on the Jews. They are all too worried about their careers and making friends rather than the truth of what is really occurring in our land…They are just upset that Robert Sungenis won’t play their game. Wonderful. I’m glad they are upset. That shows me I’m doing the right thing.” (Sept. 2009)

36) "And, once and for all, I suggest my critics start listening to what I am saying about the
anti-Christ, anti-Catholic and anti-Christian influence that various Jewish organizations are having on us, including but not limited to.. the Association of Hebrew Catholics (e.g., David Moss, Roy Schoeman, etc.), and any other such organization that puts Jewish political, religious and social interests above those of the Catholic faith and the rest of the world."

37) "In fact, Schoeman holds that those who say that the state of Israel is merely a man-made political movement that has nothing to do with Old Testament prophecy is 'of the antichrist.'"

38) About a year and a half ago, Sungenis publicly claimed that Roy Schoeman wrote the following statement:

“Unfortunately, I would say tragically, the Jews who are converting are not by and large finding their way to the Catholic Church- the conversion is largely coming from Protestant circles, notably those associated with Messianic Judaism. I believe this is due in large part to the Catholic Church having dropped the ball by eliminating all the Jewish festivals from Pesach to Sukkhot. As a result, when through the workings of Grace Jews are opened up to the truth of Jesus, rather than finding their way to the one true Church, they get scooped up by our separated brethren, who have generally adopted a more open and receptive attitude toward celebrating Jewish festivals.”

here for the facts about this fraudulent quote.)

39) In regard to Bishop Rhoades:

a) Sungenis has publicly accused Bishop Rhoades of holding to a false doctrine (which Sungenis also called a “heresy”). This false doctrine is commonly referred to as the “Dual Covenant” error, which posits that the Jewish people possess their own, salvific covenant with God.

b) Sungenis publicly claimed that Bishop Rhoades is “attempting to propagate” this error to “unsuspecting Catholics”.

c) Sungenis publicly claimed that Bishop Rhoades possesses greater “allegiances” to Jewish interests than to the Catholic faith.

d) Sungenis publicly claimed that Bishop Rhoades is attempting to stop him from exposing and refuting this doctrinal error.

40) "The bishop and the vicar general of my diocese are teaching heretical doctrines to the priests under their care...and refusing to do anything to remedy the situation....[Bishop Rhoades] and his vicar general tried to force me to adopt their heresy and I refused." (Sept. 2009)

Saying "Peace!" When There Is No Peace

“They would repair, as though it were nought, the injury to my people: ‘Peace, peace!’ they say, though there is no peace. They are odious; they have done abominable things, yet they are not at all ashamed, they know not how to blush.” (Jer. 6:14-15)

From 2002 forward, Bob has made several statements about his anti-Jewish postings that have at first glance appeared to be genuine apologies and/or retractions. In fact, even those involved in RSATJ once believed he had apologized and intended to refrain from such activities in the future. However, as documented at Robert Sungenis and the Jews, it became apparent that these apologies were not what they initially appeared to be. And since 2002, Bob has made claims about his intention to stop attacking Jews in the interest of “peace”, only to renew those attacks and expand on them when he felt matters had cooled down sufficiently. He has given a variety of excuses for recommencing his attacks over time, but the one common thread is anger and a drive to prove that he was correct about Jews all along. To be clear, the intention of this article is not to ridicule Robert Sungenis. It is to document what Sungenis has actually said and done as opposed to what some people may think he has said and done, and concurrently, to document a troubling pattern of behavior.

As Michael Forrest documented in relation to Bob’s 2002 “apologies”:

I errantly defended Bob, largely due to personal conversations we had at the time wherein he indicated that he would retract and apologize for any of the problematic material posted at CAI. But about two years later a situation arose that forced me to more thoroughly investigate exactly what had publicly transpired. This was no small task, as a great deal had been written.

When I searched at length for Bob’s public apology and retraction, I identified only an occasion on which Bob asserted that he had previously apologized. Eventually, I encountered two statements by Bob that made everything quite plain:

(Sungenis): “The only reason it (the article of Sept 2002) went through some "revisions" is that when this whole thing first started I was trying to be accommodating to those who were levying their charges. I took off some material that some people found offensive, even though I still stood by the material (and no one has proven it wrong).” (emphasis added)

And:

(Sungenis): “I told whoever would listen that I would remove those sections in the interest of peace….Again, all the material that Mr. Cork is objecting to in this present article was removed from my website weeks ago in the interest of peace.” (emphasis added)

In these places, Bob made clear what his apology was and what it was not. He neither retracted nor apologized for any of the material. He merely apologized for upsetting “some” people because “some” of it was associated with scandalous organizations. He stood firmly by the material itself. He removed the most offensive and scandalous items only “in the interest of peace.”

This was not the apology that I believed he had offered. In truth, it was really no apology or retraction at all. Bob has referred others to this article even now and has repeated or expanded upon many of the views expressed in it.

Sadly, this pattern of offering such “tactical” apologies has continued unabated. As previously documented at Robert Sungenis and the Jews, Bob began returning to his anti-Jewish crusade when matters cooled down. And few, if any, said a word in public during that time period. This is a critical fact to consider for the few who have argued that Bob would stop attacking Jews if only people would leave him alone. He was largely “left alone” for over 3 years after the 2002 debacle subsided.

Nevertheless, he returned to his anti-Jewish polemic with a vengeance. He proceeded to amass over 100 articles, Q and A’s and “Features” attacking Jews, publishing and even plagiarizing material gleaned from Holocaust deniers, white supremacists and other anti-Jewish extremists in the process (link 1 and link 2 and link 3).

Then, when he became aware of the Robert Sungenis and the Jews website early in September 2006, he posted what some people perceived as a genuine apology and a sign of repentance: his “Open Letter to the Patrons of CAI”. In this “open letter”, Bob portrayed his newest change of direction as though it was completely due to his own introspection, with no reference at all to any of the contributors to Robert Sungenis and the Jews. (This fact is particularly noteworthy as Bob would soon proceed to retract this “Open Letter” and specifically blame Jacob Michael and Michael Forrest for his return to attacks upon Jews, going so far as to say that now “I am even more determined to write about these issues”: Question 41, November 2007. Clearly, the idea that criticisms leveled by two men could ever justify attacking an entire ethnic group is absurd and clearly illustrates Bob's spiteful mindset).

He then acknowledged that he had been on a “somewhat controversial path” and that this path had “detracted from the expertise we offered to the public in the area of biblical studies” and therefore “we are retreating from those more controversial areas for the foreseeable future so that we can concentrate on our areas of strength.”

Bob continued on to say that because of this new focus on his areas of actual expertise, “we will hardly have time for anything else” but that he would rely on men like Ben Douglass, one of “the best men ever to work at CAI”, to help handle the Q and A load.

Finally, Bob ended with this apology:

“…let me offer my sincerest apologies to all the people or groups that I have offended by the manner in which I have sometimes communicated my ideas in the past four years. Whether Protestant, Catholic, Jew, Muslim or whatever, I know that some of the words I chose and some of the sources I used tended to incite offense. I can assure you that such will be the case no longer. Whenever we write about any group or individual it will be with much care and consideration.”

However, as previously noted at RSATJ, Bob only apologized for the manner in which he presented false and bigoted material, not for the actual substance of the material itself. Yet, he promised to exercise “much care and consideration” from then on.

It was at this point that Michael Forrest and Ben Douglass spent a great deal of time trying to reach an agreement that would bring a more authentic “peace” to the situation and some tangible fruits of repentance (Douglass was Sungenis' vice-president at that time). And in fact, they did hammer out an agreement. However, after explicitly giving Douglass permission to negotiate on his behalf, Sungenis proceeded to reject every element of their agreement and even added that various apologies must be made instead to him (a fuller account may be viewed here: article).

Then came another deluge of anti-Jewish articles, Q and A’s and “features” and new claims of being the target of a massive conspiracy of Jews and “Shabbot goys” [sic] (Question 44, January 2007)

Bob’s writings at CAI became so offensive that the bishop of Harrisburg intervened. And remarkably, a mere 5 days after receiving a “cease and desist” letter from Bishop Rhoades on June 29th, Bob chose to post an article smearing his bishop. And although he was given 2 weeks to comply with his bishop’s orders, not only did Bob leave his anti-Jewish material up for a full month, he opted to add to it.

He posted a cartoon of a Jewish soldier with a machine-gun pointed at the head of a young Palestinian child. He posted a Q and A in which he went to great lengths to downplay the relationship of the Jewish people to God. He wrote “,Jacob Michael, As Ass in Sheep’s Clothing”. And he also posted a review of a book by James Petras in which he made the following statements, including his own personal prophecy of “judgment” and “punishment” for Israel:

Sungenis: "The Jews are godless and getting more ungodly with each passing day."

Sungenis: “There was such unbridled destruction of people and property that, like Jacob saw in his day, we have all the signs that the nation of Israel has made itself 'stink' among the nations. As Jacob predicted, it may not be too long before their neighbors 'shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.' St. John may have predicted the same when he stated that the 'Whore of Babylon' would one day be hated and burned by the Beast and the Ten Horns (the nations)."

Sungenis: "Peace in the Middle East can only come if Israel learns her place…”

Sungenis: “Israel is as ungodly today as they were in St. Paul’s day, and the world, especially the United States, must stop condoning and encouraging its sin...If the United States does not stop, it will also soon come under God’s judgment and it will be severely punished.”

Recall, all of this after being ordered by his bishop to cease and desist writing about the Jewish people and Judaism. Then, after being called in to meet with the bishop’s representatives on July 27th, Sungenis decided to change tactics, apparently because he believed he could work with the diocese enough to save some face, as proven by a letter he subsequently wrote:

Sungenis: “If I have read [the diocese of Harrisburg and the USCCB] wrong and their intention is to censor me wholesale, then I will demand a trial and I will bring it as far up the hierarchial [sic] ladder as possible in order to fight it. For now, there is no reason to fight it, because both parties are in a win-win situation.” (Sungenis email of August 5th, forwarded by Sungenis ally Edgar Suter to a wide audience).

On July 31st, Bob posted his third “apology” at CAI, entitled: Catholic Apologetics and Its Teachings on the Jews (henceforth, CAITJ). In this letter, he once again spent considerable ink blaming others and even the Church herself for his difficulties, from “the partiality many Catholics maintain for the Jews and their ideological causes” to “the difference in emphasis that the Catholic Church herself has taught regarding the Jews, since in more traditional times a more hard-line approach was prevalent.”

And perhaps most remarkably, considering the fact that he was fully aware that he had just openly defied and attacked his own bishop over the last month, he proceeded to publicly laud his own faithfulness and humble obedience:

“Since I am a faithful son of the Catholic Church, I take their wisdom and counsel with the utmost seriousness and consider their direction as if it was from God himself. I consider it an honor not only to be a member of the Catholic Church but also to be under the vigilance of such wise and caring pastors.”

”If in the future we write any new material on the Jews, it will always be with the required due diligence, as if the bishop were present with us. Since he acts in God's stead, we will do our utmost to please him so as to preserve the peace and tranquility he so desires to maintain in the body of Christ.” Article

However, he also went on to say that the bishop’s representative (Fr. King) and the representative from the USCCB (Fr. Massa) indicated that he “had crossed the line into inappropriate language and accusations”, that he had been corrected for his “tone and content” and “I communicated to them my agreement with their overall assessment.” And as a result of this, he was removing his anti-Jewish postings, “at least until they can be rewritten with a ‘human and Christian spirit’ (can. 822: 2,3)”. He then stated that these men are "the shepherds God has placed as overseers of my life and work" and that it is "a privilege to obey them."

It is important to keep in mind that Sungenis openly acknowledged here that he was corrected for his “inappropriate language and accusations”, his “tone and content” and that he “communicated to them [his] agreement.” Because shortly thereafter, he began asserting that the diocese and USCCB only corrected him in regard to his “tone” or “manner” of expression.

According to the record, this is false. Sungenis already made clear that he was corrected for both tone and content. Furthermore, it is simply not credible to suggest that his diocese and the USCCB believed that there was an appropriate way to say that Jews have "infected" the Church and that Judaism is an “infection”, that they are “godless and getting more ungodly with each passing day” or that they toppled Bill Clinton by setting him up with Monica Lewinsky. No, the diocese saw rightly that the problem was not merely with his “tone”. And Sungenis stated that he had “communicated to them my agreement with their overall assessment.”

Sungenis then continued on in CAITJ to elaborate on his “seven theological points” about Jews. Clearly, it was presumptuous and inappropriate to publish such an extended, negative theological critique of Jews in the context of an acknowledgement of -- and supposed "apology" for -- offenses against those same people. If one has just been corrected by one’s father for unjustly attacking someone, the proper response is to apologize and observe silence for at least a time. It is completely inappropriate to immediately launch into a new critique of the harmed party. It is also worth noting that Sungenis’ theological critique of Jews was twice as long as his acknowledgment of error.

But perhaps most importantly, one will note the lack of any actual apologies or substantive retractions made by Sungenis in this entire letter. Yet, in a recent email, he still claims to have “apologized”:

“I wrote a website article that apologized for any improper tone that I had in my previous articles, but an article in which I included seven short summary points of my position on the Jews.” (email of Feb. 20, 2007)

Again, we notice Sungenis referring solely to his "tone." And the reader is challenged to identify exactly where this apology was stated in his July 31st article, CAITJ. The most charitable interpretation is that Sungenis does not understand the difference between acknowledging an offense and actually apologizing for it. Furthermore, as previously noted, what Sungenis terms “seven short summary points of my position on the Jews” took twice the space of his supposed “apology.”

An analogy may be of benefit:

Joe spreads falsehoods about Bill’s family and defames them. Joe’s falsehoods are discovered by Joe’s own father. His father confronts him. In response, Joe says, “Yes, I defamed Bill’s family. Okay, I’ll stop doing that any longer. But let me tell you what’s REALLY wrong with Bill’s family!”

Has Joe apologized? No! He has merely acknowledged what he has done and indicated that he will stop. And then he even had the audacity to immediately criticize the very people he had just offended! There was no “I’m sorry”, “I apologize”, no actual expression of remorse for having caused harm to the innocent. This is elementary Catholic moral theology that applies in the confessional as well. Not only do we acknowledge our sins, we express remorse, make whatever amends are reasonable and promise to sin no more.

Again, the reason for drawing this out is simply that Sungenis has a demonstrated history of making statements that mislead people into believing he has done what he has not done. He has not been willing to unequivocally apologize for and retract the hateful things that he has written and said. And he has repeatedly returned to his offensiveness, brushing off what people mistook for apologies as merely magnanimous gestures he has offered “for the sake of peace” or because people have simply “misunderstood” him and been offended for no real reason.

Shortly after posting CAITJ, Sungenis also began pressuring Michael Forrest and Jacob Michael to remove their documentation of his anti-Semitic activities. And in that correspondence it was clear that he had experienced no real change of heart but that his latest claims of a change in direction were just another change in tactics for the sake of public relations. He affirmed that he still believed most of what he had written about Jews, in fact, going so far as to state to Forrest:

“Neither you nor anyone else is going to get me to change my mind about the Jews, Israel, Judaism and even Roy Schoeman. What I’m telling you is, I will refrain from addressing it if you take down your website. I’ve said my piece and could easily move on.” (email of Aug. 28, 2007)

Then, in January 2008, Sungenis wrote an extensive article for Culture Wars magazine “The Old Covenant, Revoked or Not Revoked” which he also posted at BTF. In this article, he chose to slander his bishop, paint the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops with the broadest (and most condemnatory) brush and propounded a Catholic-Jewish conspiracy theory. All of this, mind you, after multiple apologies and promises to change. There is, of course, much more but it would take too much space and time to document it all.

Finally, on January 25, 2008, we arrive at apology number four: Response to P. Catan. In this apology, we come full circle with a slight twist.

Once again, Sungenis opted to use a tactic documented at the very beginning of this article: he removed his articles for the sake of peace:

Sungenis: “Whether right or wrong, I took them down so there could be peace between me and my Jewish opponents.”

After 5 years, there had only been a slight change. In 2002 Sungenis insisted that he “stood by” all of his anti-Jewish assertions. In 2008, he’s apparently not quite as sure any longer: saying “whether right or wrong” (although privately he insists he still stands by most of it). But still, it was for the sake of “peace”, not because he had actually done something wrong.

However, then we come to what is perhaps Sungenis’ most convoluted and conflicted apology to date:

“There is a fine line between criticizing the Jews and stirring up anti-Jewish sentiment, since many people, both Jew and Gentile, do not seem to have the ability to distinguish the two. I can also understand how and why, when my quotes are isolated and placed in this video, people who view it would react negatively and think I’m some kind of monster. My intentions could be very easily misunderstood, and the potentiality of that is very high.

Hence, because such political, cultural and social criticism of the Jews can so easily be misunderstood, I have decided to refrain from any more dealings with those aspects of Jewish life. I’ll leave criticism of Jewish politics and culture to people more capable than I apparently am. My expertise is in theology, and that is where I will put all my efforts. Hence, any future dealings that I have with the Jews, whether on our website or in published articles, will only concern the theological side of things. As you can see by the Jewish material presently on our website, every article is about theological matters, and that will always be the policy of our apostolate from here on out.

Finally, whatever quotes are on that video, and whatever other quotes have been stored by various people from previous things I’ve said about the Jews that may be in other places on the web, I disavow myself of all of them. Further, I retract and apologize for anthing I have said about the Jews presented in that video. Although some of the material in those quotes I will reserve the right to hold and believe in my personal thoughts because I believe the material to be factual, nevertheless, I will not be expressing those opinions in my speeches, articles, website or any other public venue. Again, I will only be expressing my thoughts in public that deal with the theological dimensions, as our apostolate has done for the past several months.”

First, Sungenis laid blame for his difficulties on the inability of many readers to make the distinction between “criticizing the Jews" and "stirring up anti-Jewish sentiment.” Remarkably, Sungenis clearly doesn’t believe he suffers from this deficit himself.

Second, he implied that he has simply been “misunderstood” because he has been taken out of context. One may reasonably inquire how Sungenis believes he was simply taken out of context and misunderstood in these sample statements (which could be multiplied):

"the Jewish element has so infected our Catholic Church today...The infection of Judaism and Zionism has become the number one enemy for us."

“Unfortunately, the Jews haven’t changed in our day. They are still the same godless racists they were in Jesus’ day. Few of them have repented of their sins.”

"The Jews are godless and getting more ungodly with each passing day."

"as long as [my critics] hold to the Jewish racist heresies of Roy Schoeman and refuse to condemn the USCCB and other hierarchy for their capitulation to the Jews, then they will never be my friends, they will be my enemies. God will be the judge of who of us has been right."

"The Jews...do intend to rule the world. And now the problem is that they want to rule the Catholic Church, too."

“Christianity is certainly not inherently violent, but unfortunately, Judaism tends to be, because real Judaism considers all non-Jews goyim that are less than animals, and this precipitates a loathing and violence against non-Jews.”

“A telltale sign in the movie industry of the shift in mores was demonstrated no better than in the Walt Disney Corporation. Founder Walter Disney was well-known in the 50s and 60s for wholesome family entertainment. Interestingly enough, Walt had a policy of not hiring Jewish people.”

“The charge of 'anti-Semitism' is nothing but a clever ploy”

Of course, this does not take into account his use of fraudulent quotes to smear Jews or the phenomenon of accusing essentially all of his critics of being “Jews”, partial Jews, having Jewish family members or “hiding” their Jewish ethnicity and then pushing a naïve follower, against his conscience, to attempt to “out” one of his critics as a Jew. (Article)

Third, Sungenis has already violated his promise to deal only with theological issues involving Jews (article 1, article 2 and article 3).

Fourth, Sungenis recently wrote in his article of February 9, 2008, The Old Covenant, Revoked or Not Revoked :

"I did decide to calm some of the storm by removing Jewish articles from my website..." (p.11)

He removed articles "to calm some of the storm."

And finally, Sungenis indicated that he “disavows” all the most problematic statements he has made about Jews, and that he apologizes for and retracts them. In isolation, this certainly looks more like an acceptable apology.

Unfortunately, in light of all the caveats and equivocations he already made leading up this more appropriate apology, it is impossible to know what he truly intended to convey. And to further undermine the import of this apology he went on to say that he still believes some of what he wrote “in my personal thoughts” because he believes it to be "factual", although he doesn’t tell us exactly what things he still believes. Also, as mentioned previously, he has indicated to others that he still believes most of what he wrote and even insisted that “no one” would ever change his mind about Jews. However, regardless, he claims he won’t be “expressing” those thoughts in public any longer.

According to Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary, the definition of “disavow” is:

To disclaim knowledge of, connection with or responsibility for; repudiate; disown.

So, an explanation of how one may “disavow” an idea while simultaneously holding to it and believing it to be “factual” would certainly be helpful and interesting. (See "More Definition Difficulties")

Certainly, if Sungenis would at least refrain from publicly expressing his non-theological prejudices against Jews, that would be a positive development. Unfortunately, as documented, he has already violated that promise (article 1, article 2 and article 3). And also, one may be permitted to question whether anyone should be satisfied when a man who has a history of expressing seriously prejudiced views essentially says, “I’m still prejudiced, but I won’t express my prejudice so openly any longer. You can come back and trust me again.” That is, if such promises can even be believed at all (article).

Additionally, as documented here, it is highly unlikely that such a deeply held prejudice could ever truly remain buried. It will almost certainly rise to the surface, one way or another. And, at least based on history, it seems highly unlikely that Sungenis will not eventually return to full expression of his animus against Jews.

Last, we are left with Sungenis’ grave mistreatment of Roy Schoeman. It is almost one year now since he realized that the damaging quote he publicly attributed to Schoeman was most likely fraudulent. And it is six months since he received absolute confirmation that it is fraudulent. And yet, he has refused to issue a public retraction or apology. And he has yet to even send a personal apology to Schoeman.

In conclusion, as we have seen over the last several pages, Sungenis’ “works” speak clearly for themselves.

In 2006, in response to the Jewish controversies, Bob wrote:

“My sole goal is to promote the Catholic Church of Jesus Christ as best I can with the gifts that God has given me.” (CAI Open Letter)

Bob has falsely accused numerous good men, including his own bishop now, of having greater allegiances to Jewish causes than to Jesus Christ and His Church. Certainly, turnabout is fair play. May one not then seriously question Bob’s allegiances? Is his primary allegiance to himself and his anti-Jewish crusade or is it to the Church?

We genuinely hope and pray that Bob finally proves that the Church and Christ come first in his life and apostolate by complying with his bishop’s orders. For while it is plain that he has been given substantial gifts that may benefit the Church, he is so significantly lacking in the virtues of charity, prudence, wisdom and discernment that these gifts have too often been used to her serious detriment and the detriment of many of the people she was created by Christ to save.

In the event that Sungenis decides to continue disobeying his bishop’s orders, then each of us will be left with a serious decision to make. Are we “of Sungenis” or are we of Christ’s Church (cf. 1Cor. 1:10-17)? Sadly, he has "refused to listen even to the Church" (cf. Matt. 18:17). And the reader can discover the remainder of the Lord's instructions for himself.

At one point in his most recent apology, Sungenis complained:

“some people have an agenda to destroy me no matter what I do to rectify the situation.”

In 2005, Michael Forrest privately gave the following assessment and remedy to Sungenis, and it applies equally well today:

“after reviewing your apologies from 2002 and talking to you on the phone about the Jewish conspiracy theories and the Holocaust you relayed back in 2002, it is now clear to me that you never retracted or apologized for the accusations you leveled, nor did you ever intend to. And I believe this is precisely the reason the issue has never really died. I believe you ought to have issued a genuine retraction and apology.”

This is a matter of basic Catholic moral theology. When we sin, we specify what we have done, sincerely ask forgiveness, seek to make reparation for any harm done, and make a firm resolution to “sin no more.” Such a process opens up the floodgates of grace, making possible true healing and reconciliation.

May God give Bob the grace to step forward in faith and may he finally repent, bring forth the fruits of true repentance and so find forgiveness and reconciliation.

Sungenis's Contradictions and Flip-flops on the Jews as Accursed

In regard to how the Fathers view the Jewish people, Robert Sungenis has made the following contradictory statements:

April 2004

" I would not say there was a consensus among the Fathers that the Jews were an accursed people. In fact, you hardly find the words "Jews" and "cursed" in the same sentence in the Fathers. There was certainly a consensus that the Jews, as a whole people, were judged by God for their sins, but there are very few Fathers who held that the Jews were cursed as a race. Of those Justin Martyr, Chrysostom and Augustine seem the most prominent, but even then, their words can be taken in more than one way." (emphasis added)
Question 30, April 2004

September 2006

"As I said earlier, the Fathers were in consensus (that is, there were no dissenting voices among them) that the Jewish people were...a cursed people" (emphasis added)

Michael Forrest and the Jews, page 43

Then Sungenis has also made the following statement, although it does not directly address the teaching of the Fathers:

December 2006:

“the fact that the Jew can be saved today is the proof that God has not rejected or cursed them” (emphasis added)

Q&A #57, December 2006

Clearly, the statements made by Sungenis in April 2004 and September 2006 about the views of the Fathers in regard to Jews are contradictory. And Sungenis’s statement in December 2006 seems reconcilable with his statement of September 2006 only if we take him to mean that he and the Church (in Nostra Aetate) both reject what Sungenis himself characterized as the unanimous consensus of the Fathers…a rather precarious position to take.

An Update on the Negotiations

Visitors who came to this web site after October 1 are already aware that there has been a controversy brewing concerning Robert Sungenis, president of Catholic Apologetics International ("CAI"). For those who have been fortunate enough to remain "out of the loop" concerning the controversy, a brief chronological summary of past events is in order.

A few weeks into September, Michael Forrest, a former associate of Sungenis and CAI, published a web site, Robert Sungenis and the Jews, critiquing Sungenis' demonstrably prejudiced attitude against Jewish people. Forrest's copious documentation, using multiple examples culled from Sungenis' own writings, convincingly demonstrated that Sungenis has a reflexively negative attitude towards Jewish people, and that he has been willing to sacrifice accuracy, fairness, and sound research in pursuing his pet projects. Perhaps most disturbingly, Forrest documented that Sungenis has more than once relied on historical revisionist sources, white supremacist sources, and neo-Nazi sources, sometimes posting entire articles written by these sorts of authors, without any sort of attribution. In short, Forrest more than adequately proved that Sungenis should in no way be considered any kind of expert or authority on Jewish issues, because he cannot be trusted to be objective or fair in his approach to these subjects.

Sungenis responded to Forrest's web site with what can only be called a calumnious personal attack, publishing a 72-page tome entitled "Michael Forrest and the Jews: Let's Separate Fact from Fiction." Among the many so-called "facts" presented by Sungenis were included several outright falsehoods, including:

  • That "Michael [Forrest] did not leave CAI of his own accord. I terminated his stay with us."

  • That Forrest was "terminated ... because of the underhanded activity he was doing at CAI."

  • That this so-called "underhanded activity" consisted of Forrest "[rearranging] our website, without telling me, so that ... 'offending' material no longer appeared."

  • That Forrest engaged in this underhanded rearranging of CAI's web site because "Michael's concert promoter told Michael that he would not hire him to play in the concert because of his association with CAI and because of some of the 'Jewish' articles on our website."

  • That Forrest "decided to sacrifice our friendship" because of the threat CAI posed to "his blossoming musical career."

Suffice it to say that none of this was true: Forrest left CAI of his own accord, and Sungenis' own private emails prove it; Forrest never rearranged the CAI web site, nor did he ever remove any material from the site - what he did was ask the webmaster to post a short statement when John Paul II was on his death bed, which said that CAI's prayers were with the Holy Father; not only did Forrest not leave CAI because of a "blossoming musical career," on the contrary, he had definitely ended his musical ventures nearly a year prior to leaving CAI (I have an email on file in which Forrest mentions to the bass player in his band that he is selling all of his musical equipment - not typically a smart move for someone who is hoping to further a "blossoming musical career"); there never was a "concert promoter," nor was there a "musical gig" on the line - there was a high school boy who had asked Forrest to give a speech on traditional marriage at the high school, and Forrest's association with CAI was never raised as an issue by this young man (Forrest volunteered his time to the high school pro bono, by the way, contrary to Sungenis' insinuation that there were mercenary motives involved).

In response to Sungenis' blatantly false allegations, libel, and calumny, I posted a defense of Forrest at this web site; in that response, I made use of some private email correspondence between Sungenis and Forrest in order to prove, beyond any question, that Sungenis was lying, and that his accusations were demonstrably false.

Nearly a week later, Sungenis sent me a threatening email, saying that he was going to sue me for libel and invasion of privacy if I did not remove his private emails from the site and issue a public apology. The irony is rich indeed. One wonders, of course, how publishing someone's own words can be called "libel," when "libel" deals with the spread of false information; more than this, however, one wonders precisely when Sungenis started caring about the publication of private correspondence, given the fact that he did this very same thing to Mario Derksen in February of 2005. Derksen's response can be accessed here, in which he complains that "To my dismay, Robert Sungenis has published on his web site what I thought to be a private conversation"; Derksen also complains that Sungenis not only posted a private correspondence without permission, but that he dishonestly "posted our conversation, though not in its entirety."

It is evident from this that Sungenis operates according to a double-standard. It was apparently acceptable in his mind to post Derksen's private correspondence, and for no other purpose than to have a new article for CAI's web site, but yet it was a clear case of "invasion of privacy", deserving of a lawsuit, for me to post his private correspondence, for no other purpose than to clear Forrest's name of the defamatory charges Sungenis had made against him.

Let us step back for a moment, then, and consider the big picture as it stands so far. Sungenis reacted to Forrest's initial critique with hostility, and rather than simply engage the substance of Forrest's arguments, he chose to engage in blatant libel and character assassination. Thus, he brought upon himself the discomfort of having his private correspondence published on the Internet; I would have preferred to refrain from doing something like that, but Sungenis' calumnious and reputation-damaging response to Forrest necessitated it. In response to my defense of Forrest, Sungenis again chose to take the low road. He could have simply admitted that he had fouled up the facts and libeled Forrest, offered to post a public apology, and asked me to remove my essay in exchange for such an apology. I would have been happy to do so. Instead, he responded with more hostility, threatening to take legal action against me (sadly, this kind of bluster is a common tactic used by Sungenis, as others can verify). As a side note, one can only marvel at Sungenis' fearlessness; after all, he believes in a well-orchestrated and world-wide Jewish conspiracy to take over the media, the movies, the government, and everything else, and yet he apparently thinks that the civil courts would give him a favorable hearing when the central subject of the case would concern his negative articles against the Jews. I suppose it's good to know that there is at least one area, namely the legal system, which Sungenis believes has not been taken over by the Jews.

Given that his consistent response to Forrest and myself had been one of hostility, it was a little surprising when Sungenis' "Vice President of Apologetics" Ben Douglass contacted Forrest with a proposed truce. Douglass expressed his desire to put an end to the controversy, and so he offered Forrest a proposal. Once again, in the interests of making everything surrounding this controversy crystal clear, so that no one can accuse either me or Mr. Forrest of misrepresenting the facts, I will quote Douglass' exact words:

CAI will take down all of Robert's old articles on the Jews and Judaism, and the latest articles in response to your website, Robert will stop writing about Jews and Israel, and in the future I will handle all matters Jewish at CAI ... In exchange you and Jacob Michael take down your articles. (Douglass, email of Sep. 29, 2006)

Having already seen how Sungenis was handling matters, with his typical posturing and bravado, a proposal such as this seemed a little surprising. Douglass was offering more than Forrest had ever proposed to Sungenis, and when Forrest initially offered a far less stringent proposal to Sungenis several weeks earlier, Sungenis accused him of trying to censor CAI. Now here was CAI's own VP of Apologetics, offering a deal in which Sungenis would agree to stop writing about the Jews completely?

Once again, the bizarre schizophrenia at CAI seemed to be rearing its confused heads. Which voice does one listen to in such an instance? The voice of Sungenis, or the voice of Douglass? Forrest chose to listen to Douglass, and to give CAI another chance. No one can say he didn't at least try, nor can anyone accuse Forrest of not leaving his door open.

In his response to Douglass, Forrest wisely insisted on confirming one critical point: was Douglass speaking for himself, or did he have Sungenis' authority to even be offering such a proposal?

Forrest wrote to Douglass, "Before engaging in negotiations with you, I need confirmation that you have the authority to speak on Bob's behalf in order to reach an agreement." (Forrest, email of Sep. 29, 2006)

However, precisely as this exchange was taking place, Sungenis sent us yet another 70-page rebuttal - this time attacking me and my defense of Forrest. More confusion, more signs of schizophrenia. Sungenis indicated to us that this rebuttal had not yet been posted, and that if we were going to enter into negotiations with CAI, all parties involved were required to pull down their respective articles as a sign of good-will. If we would not do this, Sungenis insisted that he would be posting his rebuttal immediately. In other words, the negotiations for a truce began with a bizarre and needless threat. It is almost as if Sungenis had forgotten that it was he who had left the first series of negotiations in a huff, accusing Forrest of all manner of dishonesty and treachery in the process.

Douglass got back to Forrest, and forwarded Forrest an email exchange between himself and Sungenis. Again, it is necessary here to publicize exactly what was said, because it demonstrates something of the most critical importance. In this exchange between Douglass and Sungenis, Douglass had said, "I gave Forrest the same proposal I gave you. He said that he wanted confirmation that I had authority to negotiate on your behalf before he negotiated with me." (Douglass, email of Sep. 30, 2006, emphasis added) Sungenis had responded, "Of course you have my permission." (Sungenis, email of Sep. 30, 2006)

Two things are to be noted here: First, Douglass affirmed that the proposal he sent to Forrest was "the same proposal" he had shown to Sungenis. Thus, Sungenis was fully aware of the terms contained in that proposal, namely, that Douglass would be writing all future articles on Jewish issues at CAI, that Sungenis would not be writing on Jewish issues any more, and that all the old material on the Jews would be permanently removed from CAI's site. Second, it should be noticed that Sungenis slightly altered the terminology used by Douglass: Forrest had asked if Douglass had authority from Sungenis; Sungenis only said that Douglass had his permission. This is a slight difference, certainly, but it proved in the end to have made all the difference. As we would soon discover, Douglass had no authority whatsoever - but he did have permission.

Following this, I had a short exchange with Douglass via an instant-messaging program. In this conversation, I asked Douglass whether he had any confidence in Sungenis' willingness to abide by the terms of Douglass' proposal. After all, in the unpublished rebuttal Sungenis had sent to us as a threat, he had written:

Forrest demanded a moratorium on writing on Jewish converts for a year, and even requested that this moratorium go on indefinitely. I make no such promises. In fact, whenever a Jewish issue comes up on our QA board, I will be answering it as forthrightly as I did before. I just won't be putting up any more Feature articles on Jewish issues, or quite frankly, many other issues, since I simply won't have the time to do so. (Sungenis, "Response to Jacob Michael's essay 'Sungenis and the Jews: Comments on a Controversy'", unpublished draft, emphasis added)

This admission was quite interesting, given the fact that Sungenis' Open Letter to the Patrons of CAI had said that he would be backing away from Jewish issues in the future, that he would be focusing more on biblical theology from now on, and that he was sorry he had offended people with "the words I chose and some of the sources I used." It is clear now, reading his words quoted above, that what this "apology" really meant is that Sungenis would only be backing away from "Feature articles on Jewish issues," not because of any personal remorse or recognition of wrong-doing in the past, but because "I simply won't have the time." Far from backing away from Jewish issues, as he insinuates in his Open Letter, Sungenis insists above that "whenever a Jewish issue comes up on our QA board, I will be answering it as forthrightly as I did before."

Mark well: for anyone who read Sungenis' Open Letter and interpreted it as anything like a real apology, or a manifestation of contrition and repentance, these stunning admissions should make the truth clear: the Open Letter was nothing but a sham, a piece of Public Relations propaganda - it was a very well-crafted statement that there would only be a shift in emphasis at CAI, and only for the period of time required for Sungenis to focus on other projects, such as the CAI Study Bible.

This admission of the truth, and the real meaning of the Open Letter, fits the facts quite well. Sungenis promises to continue addressing Jewish issues in the Q&A forum "as forthrightly as ever"; meanwhile, as evidence of the fact that he has had no change of heart or twinge of conscience, the questionable material - for which he "apologized," mind you - remains on Sungenis' web site, even though it has been three weeks since he supposedly apologized for it; there appears to be no rush to remove the material, now that the heat is off and the patrons of CAI seem to have been placated by the Open Letter. Fortunately, we now know the truth: Sungenis hasn't changed a bit, and he has no intention of turning over a new leaf.

But we must return to the chronology of events. Sungenis' admissions to us were somewhat troubling, to say the least. In light of his apparent refusal to change his ways, I asked Douglass, "do you really think Bob is going to abide by any terms of negotiation, given what he said in his 'rebuttal' to me?" (instant message chat log, October 1, 2006) I then quoted for Douglass the disturbing admission of Sungenis which was just quoted above, but Douglass assured me "that will change if we are able to negotiate something," because "[Sungenis] gave me permission to propose that deal to Michael, and set me in charge of negotiating." (Douglass, instant message chat log, October 1, 2006)

Note again: just as he did with Forrest, so also Douglass affirmed for me that he was operating with Sungenis' permission (though not necessarily with Sungenis' authority), and more importantly, that Sungenis had granted this permission even after having seen the proposal that was given to Forrest. Read his words again: Sungenis "gave me permission to propose that deal to Michael." Sungenis knew full well what was being offered by way of negotiation, and in full possession of this knowledge, he gave Douglass permission to continue on with the negotiations.

Taking Douglass' assurances at face value, and satisfied that this was not going to be a waste of his time, Forrest agreed to enter negotiations with Douglass, and also agreed to pull his web site down for the duration of the discussions; he asked me to remove my own essay which I had written in his defense, and I did. Sungenis, for his part, quickly removed his attack on Forrest, as well as Thomas Herron's response to Forrest, from CAI's site. All of this was completed by the end of the day, October 1, 2006, and negotiations were ready to begin.

After a few days of talks, Forrest and Douglass had worked out an extremely clear and precisely-worded agreement. It is worth emphasizing that both men were involved in the writing, re-writing, revising, and finalizing of the document, and both men sacrificed quite a bit of time and effort to complete the agreement in a timely fashion. This is an important fact to recognize in light of Sungenis' later rejection of the terms agreed upon by Forrest and Douglass. Throughout his lengthy and sustained criticisms of the agreement, it is hard to believe that Sungenis' own VP was involved in crafting the text, so harsh are his words.

It should be noted again that, throughout the course of the negotiations, all of Sungenis' articles on Jewish issues, complete with their use of sources which Sungenis himself admitted were imprudent (cf. his Open Letter, last paragraph), remained up at the CAI web site. The significance of this point should not be missed. Sungenis proved that he is capable of acting quite quickly in removing material from his web site when his own reputation is on the line, as evidenced by the fact that he had removed his response to Forrest within a matter of hours, as part of the negotiations. One must wonder, then, why it is taking him so long to remove material from his web site which he admits has been a source of offense to others. He supposedly apologized for this material in his Open Letter, yet the material remains publicly accessible, even now, nearly a month after he has admitted its problematic nature. As was seen before, Sungenis appears to have one set of standards for everyone else, but another set of standards for himself. If nothing else, this proves again that Sungenis is concerned for no one but himself; his Open Letter was an obvious attempt at damage control, nothing more. As an interesting aside, it is worth noting that Sungenis made a very general apology in his Open Letter, but whenever he is challenged on specific points of contention, he defends and justifies himself; it might be an appropriate inquiry to ask Sungenis to what specifically his apology refers? Perhaps Sungenis would be willing to supply us with an itemized list of where he has been naughty and where he has been nice?

Because the fact of these negotiations was such a public matter, not only through its mention at Forrest's site, but also at this web site, it seems necessary and entirely appropriate to reproduce here, in its entirety, the text of the agreement which Forrest and Douglass reached.

Agreement between Robert Sungenis/Ben Douglass and Michael Forrest/Jacob Michael

October 3, 2006

The following apply to Robert Sungenis and Ben Douglass:

1) All articles by Robert involving Jews will be permanently taken down at CAI.

2) All current Q and A's of a non-theological nature that involve Jews will be permanently taken down at CAI.

3) All current Q and A's of a theological nature involving Jews will be evaluated by Ben and Michael Forrest. If any is determined to be biased or negative in regard to Jews it will be permanently removed.

4) There will be no future "News Alerts" (articles written by others, posted at CAI) that stereotype or broad-brush Jews at CAI. There will be no "News Alerts" that entertain Jewish conspiracy theories, focus primarily on Jewish political issues, use dubious sources or originate from dubious sources. Neither will such "News Alerts" raise the issue of any individual's Jewish lineage in a way that implies that this lineage is cause for suspicion or derision.

5) No articles will be written by Ben involving Jewish stereotypes, broad-brushing, conspiracy theories or dubious sources. Any articles written by Ben on Jewish issues will be primarily of a theological nature and will not raise the issue of any individual's Jewish lineage in a way that implies that such lineage is cause for suspicion or derision. It is acknowledged that certain Catholic theological issues may arise in the context of a political situation (e.g. just war doctrine) and this agreement is not intended to prevent Ben from legitimately addressing them under such circumstances.

6) A reasonable attempt at balance on Jewish issues will be made (positive vs. negative, volume, etc.).

7) Robert will not write on Jewish issues, whether Q and A's or articles. Ben Douglass may write future articles and answer future questions involving Jewish issues at CAI and elsewhere under the same guidelines set out in #5 and #6.1

The following apply to Michael Forrest:

1) The website http://www.sungenisandthejews.com/ will remain down permanently with the exception of the statement indicated in #3.

2) If Michael believes a violation of this agreement has taken place, he will first contact Ben and/or Robert in order to try to resolve the issue privately (making a fair and reasonable effort to reach a resolution).

3) Michael will put up the text of this agreement at http://www.sungenisandthejews.com/ and will ask others to please refrain from unnecessary and unconstructive banter and argument about this situation.

The following apply to Jacob Michael:

1) Jacob's article will remain down.

2) If Jacob believes a violation of this agreement has taken place he will first contact Ben and/or Robert in order to try to resolve the issue privately (making a fair and reasonable effort to reach a resolution).

1Note: Ben also agreed to take a hiatus of several months before returning to any Jewish issues (excluding Q and A's), in order to allow things to begin to heal. Although this is not part of the formal agreement, it is a prudential decision to help build good will. (Forrest/Douglass, Agreement of October 3, 2006)

This was the final text of the agreement as it was sent to Sungenis for his approval. When one considers the text of this agreement and compares it to the much shorter "proposal" that Douglass sent to Sungenis and Forrest, it is clear that the two proposals are of the same essence and substance, the latter being merely an extended clarification and more specific iteration of the former. In some cases, the final text was even more lenient than Douglass' original proposal; for example, the final text says that Forrest and Douglass will evaluate existing QA material at CAI, and determine which pieces should be removed, while Douglass' original proposal simply offered to pull all the Jewish material. Be that as it may, Sungenis, as it has been repeatedly shown, had seen Douglass' proposal, and had agreed to let Douglass go forward as his representative in the negotiations. He voluntarily bowed out of the discussion and left Douglass to negotiate for him, knowing full well what the terms of the initial proposal were. In a note to us before negotiations began, he had said, "When you think you've arrived at a reasonable resolution, then contact me and I'll give my input." (Sungenis, email of Sep. 30, 2006)

As it turns out, when Sungenis said, "I'll give my input," he actually meant, "I will reject the final agreement almost in its entirety." And that is precisely what he did.

On October 5, Forrest received his response from Sungenis. Much of this response will be reproduced below, in the interests of putting the black-and-white facts fully into view. Lest anyone should wish to make the accusation that what is produced below is wrenched from its context, the entirety of Sungenis' response to the joint agreement is being made available here. While it is not the normal policy of this web site to publish private email correspondence, unfortunately Sungenis has demonstrated that he is all-too capable of misrepresenting the facts and spinning the truth to further his own agenda, and thus there is no alternative but to pre-empt such an eventuality by making his entire response available.

It is worth repeating yet again: Douglass had sent Sungenis his initial proposal, which said "CAI will take down all of Robert's old articles on the Jews and Judaism," yet even though Sungenis agreed to let Douglass negotiate with Forrest based on this proposal, in the end Sungenis rejected point #1 of the joint agreement completely, stating that "there [will] be no outside censorship of CAI." (Sungenis, email of Oct. 5, 2006)

We can be excused for asking why Sungenis considered this to be "censorship," when he clearly didn't consider it to be "censorship" when Douglass first made this precise proposal to Forrest. For whatever reason, Sungenis agreed to move forward with negotiations based on Douglass' proposal, and then flatly rejected the joint agreement as "not acceptable."

Also "not acceptable" was the second point of the agreement, that Q&A material of a "non-theological nature" concerning the Jews would be removed from CAI's site. Keeping in mind that it was partly in these Q&A's that Sungenis had previously availed himself of unsavory sources, stereo-typed the Jews, and dabbled in conspiracy theories, it was somewhat confusing to read Sungenis' response to this point of the agreement: "Those questions and my answers will stay where they are unless there are: (a) falsehoods stated in those answers, which are proven by verified documentation, (b) uncharitable remarks, (c) sources that are questionable." (ibid.)

It should not be missed by the reader that Sungenis changed the terms of the discussion with these words. No longer is this a question of negotiation and mutual attempt to achieve a peaceful resolution; it is now a challenge to debate: he will only removed the QA material that contains "falsehoods," but these must be "proven by verified documentation." Given what Forrest has already exposed concerning Sungenis' sloppy scholarship (which Sungenis himself admitted in his public response to Forrest), is it not strange that Sungenis should now behave as though his QA material is unimpeachably solid, and can only in turn be challenged by "verified documentation" (a responsibility of which Sungenis absolves himself when he is the one writing the material)?

Beyond this, as has been mentioned, Sungenis already admitted in his Open Letter that the material on his site sometimes draws on questionable sources - but here, he promises to remove material that uses "sources that are questionable" only if such a charge can be demonstrated. To anyone who has been paying attention, the matter is clear: it already has been demonstrated that Sungenis' sources are questionable, and Sungenis himself admitted this very thing three weeks ago, and yet the material remains on CAI's site at the time of this writing! It is beyond question now what Sungenis' noble-sounding words and protestations are worth.

Not content to merely reject the third point of the agreement, that "All current Q and A's of a theological nature involving Jews will be evaluated by Ben and Michael Forrest," and that "If any is determined to be biased or negative in regard to Jews it will be permanently removed," Sungenis also felt it necessary to throw in a few more personal jabs at Forrest: "As of this juncture, I can hardly trust Mr. Forrest as a human being, much less his attempt at dictatorial censoring of the CAI website, considering the collusion and calumny he has perpetrated on me the last few weeks, and the manner in which he left CAI a year ago, which was basically dishonest." (ibid.)

Even though Sungenis' allegations concerning Forrest's dishonesty have been proven false by Sungenis' own emails, it is clear that he is going to remain obstinate and continue to hurl falsehoods. This is why it is impossible to negotiate with Sungenis, or to interact with him in any meaningful way; he simply does not inhabit the space known as "reality."

At this point in Sungenis' response to the joint agreement, it is clear that the negotiations have broken down and utterly failed. I repeat again: Sungenis approved these negotiations based on Douglass' proposal, and he gave Douglass permission to negotiate on his behalf; yet here, he behaves as though these very attempts at negotiation are nothing but an insult from Forrest - apparently Sungenis forgot that Douglass was largely responsible for crafting the text. Perhaps Sungenis should look for another VP of Apologetics, if Douglass is apparently moronic enough to approve an agreement so clearly reprehensible in Sungenis' eyes. This much is certain: we are no longer dealing with an attempt at making peace at this point in Sungenis' response. On the contrary, Sungenis here returns to the personal insults against Forrest, saying he can "hardly trust Mr. Forrest as a human being," accusing him of "dictatorial censorship" and "collusion and calumny," and calling him "basically dishonest." Here the obvious question arises: if this is how Sungenis feels about Forrest, then why did he agree to let Douglass negotiate with this vile excuse for a human being in the first place? There is a word for this: schizophrenia.

Thus far we have seen how points 1-3 of the joint agreement met with complete rejection and continued self-justification at the hands of Sungenis. Point #4 of the agreement did not fare much better:

Proposal: 4) There will be no future "News Alerts" (articles written by others, posted at CAI) that stereotype or broad-brush Jews at CAI.

R. Sungenis: We will put up whatever "News Alerts" that we desire. Furthermore, we don't make a practice of "stereotyping" or "broad-brushing" Jews at CAI anymore than we do Protestants, Muslims, the Democrats or the Mafia. If you see an example of such treatment, you can submit your concern to CAI and we will act promptly on your request. Our only interest is stating factual remarks about any issue we cover. Moreover, "News Items" contain the opinions of those not affiliated with CAI. In any case, if we feel there is any merit to a News Item, we will post it, regardless of who it concerns.

Proposal: There will be no "News Alerts" that entertain Jewish conspiracy theories, focus primarily on Jewish political issues, use dubious sources or originate from dubious sources.

R. Sungenis: CAI will focus on any issue when it chooses to do so, whether it deals with Jews, Muslims, the Republicans or Democrats, Cesar Chavez or any other issue. CAI will not use sources without qualification and has already apologized for some of the sources it used in the past. As for conspiracy theories, CAI does not entertain conspiracy theories as factual material. We, however, caution our critics that, just because the material deals with Jewish history, it does not automatically make it a conspiracy theory.

Proposal: Neither will such "News Alerts" raise the issue of any individual's Jewish lineage in a way that implies that this lineage is cause for suspicion or derision.

R. Sungenis: It is not our objective to create suspicion or derision for anyone. It is merely our goal to tell as much factual information as we can about certain persons, places or things, and let the chips fall where they may. (ibid.)

Note that Sungenis cleverly dodges responsibility for the scandal involved in his previous posting of News Alerts that came from White Supremacist sources, by saying that these items "contain the opinions of those not affiliated with CAI." How would Sungenis respond to his own argument here? We turn to his rebuke of Dave Armstrong in a January, 2005 Q&A at CAI:

Regarding the references on your site to Kristol, Coulter, et al:

If you have no political affiliation with these neo-cons, then I suggest you put a disclaimer on your site, otherwise people are going to get the wrong impression, and you can't blame them if they do. Any person with common sense who sees their names on your website would assume that you support the political views of the aforementioned unless you say otherwise. (Sungenis, Q&A, January, 2005, emphasis added)

Precisely. But here again, we are watching a double-standard at work. When Dave Armstrong refers to "neo-cons" like Kristol and Coulter on his web site, Sungenis demonstrates remarkably clear vision: Armstrong is giving people "the wrong impression," and further, Armstrong "can't blame them" for coming away with the idea that Armstrong is in agreement with his sources - nay, further, such a conclusion is "common sense," according to Sungenis. Yet, when the tables are turned and Sungenis' must measure up to his own yardstick, he suddenly loses all objectivity. We insist that Sungenis abide by his own rules; he has affiliated himself with White Supremacist and neo-Nazi sources, which, according to his standards, means that he cannot blame anyone for assuming that he supports the views of those sources. The fact that he has yet to remove this material from his site should, according to his own standards, be more than enough proof for "any person with common sense" that Sungenis agrees with historical revisionists and White Supremacists. There is no reason to believe otherwise, at least, for those of us with "common sense."

The last words in the quote from Sungenis' response to the joint agreement above are also interesting: "It is not our objective to create suspicion or derision for anyone. It is merely our goal to tell as much factual information as we can about certain persons, places or things, and let the chips fall where they may." This appears to be another way of saying that it's not Sungenis' fault if people come away from his site feeling suspicion and derision for the Jews; after all, according to him, he has been doing nothing more than publishing "factual information," and then letting "the chips fall where they may." Can he help it if people draw the natural conclusions, if that's where those particular chips fall?

Point #5 on the joint agreement was likewise rejected by Sungenis, with more boasting promises that Sungenis and Douglass will continue to write and post whatever they darn well please:

Proposal: 5) No articles will be written by Ben involving Jewish stereotypes, broad-brushing, conspiracy theories or dubious sources.

R. Sungenis: Besides what was already stated above about CAI's commitment not to "stereotype," etc., Ben Douglass will write whatever he pleases on Jewish issues, or any other issue that he feels is of concern to the public. Ben, being the kind and dedicated person that he is, will never denigrate or castigate Jewish people. He will simply do his research and state the facts as history has recorded them, and let the chips fall where they may. For example, Ben plans on doing a paper on the Talmud. Knowing Ben as I do, he will use the most impeccable sources, give the material the highest caliber of research, and communicate his ideas in a non-offensive way. (Sungenis, email of Oct. 5, 2006)

Is Sungenis not behaving here, as well as in previous statements, as though Forrest's concerns have no basis in reality? He acts as though it is an insult to even suggest that CAI would host articles that stereo-type the Jews, broad-brush the Jews, promote conspiracy theories, and use dubious sources. The facts of the matter, however, are that Sungenis has done this very thing repeatedly; he was called on the carpet for it back in 2002, and Forrest has compiled nearly 100 pages of evidence on www.sungenisandthejews.com that prove Sungenis has only gotten worse in the last four years. Forrest posted his critique of Sungenis precisely because Sungenis has a problem in this area; despite the mountains of evidence, however, Sungenis pretends as though there is no problem whatsoever, and speaks as though CAI has a stellar reputation for being above board in dealing with Jewish issues. It is almost as though he feigns indignation that Forrest would even suggest such things. Again, Sungenis' behavior here suggests that he is simply no longer in touch with reality.

Finally, the last two points of the proposal that concerned CAI were likewise brushed off and/or rejected:

Proposal: 6) A reasonable attempt at balance on Jewish issues will be made (positive vs. negative, volume, etc.).

R. Sungenis: That will always be the case at CAI, with any issue that we address.

Proposal: 7) Robert will not write on Jewish issues, whether Q and A's or articles.

R. Sungenis: Not acceptable. I will write on any issue I desire, and no person outside of CAI, except my bishop or the pope, is going to inhibit my freedom or censor my articles by force of canonical law. I have voluntarily decided that I am not going to write articles on political issues. If someone asks a question on our QA board about Jewish issues, I will answer it, but it will be done in the most respectful, charitable way possible, and all sources will be checked before divulged. (ibid.)

Here too, Sungenis behaves as though CAI has "always" used balance when dealing with Jewish issues, even though the facts prove that such is not the case; more importantly, such a contention renders his apologies incoherent and meaningless. Why apologize if CAI has ever been a paragon of balance and uprightness? But consider: how many articles at CAI deal with critiques of Islam, for example? And how many deal with critiques of Jews? This is no kind of "balance" worthy of the name!

Sungenis once again insists that he will retain the right to "write on any issue I desire," even though - at the risk of redundancy - he agreed to negotiate with Forrest based on the proposal that Douglass offered, which precisely denied him the right to "write on any issue I desire." He appears obsessed with the issue of censorship, and is at great pains to make it clear that he will not be censored, except by "my bishop or the pope." This claim, however, falls flat when one considers that Sungenis believes he has a Divine mandate as a true prophet of God; as he said to Forrest in an email, "I have a job to do and that is to protect our Catholic Church from any charlatans or erroneous doctrine, whether it happens to be John Paul II, Scott Hahn or anyone else." (Sungenis, email of March 22, 2005) If Sungenis thinks it is his job to protect the Church against the Pope, what reason is there to believe that he would humbly receive correction from the Pope, much less his bishop, on Jewish issues?

The rest of the joint agreement, as was seen earlier, dealt with issues pertaining to myself and to Forrest; of course, Sungenis had no problem with these points. In short, he systematically, and point-by-point, rejected all the portions of the joint agreement that pertained to CAI, but was quite happy to affirm the points that suggested Forrest and I should keep our respective articles out of the public eye.

Beyond this, he further requested that, in addition to keeping my defense of Forrest down on my site, I should offer him a public apology for:

  1. publishing his private emails

  2. "maintaining the accusation that I did not read Schoeman's book"

  3. "Denying that when Michael Forrest left CAI it was in the midst of an engagement he was trying to arrange with a promoter"

  4. "Stating or implying that Calamus Intl. University is a "diploma mill"

  5. claiming "that I stated that I 'initiated email contact with Mr. Forrest.' I didn't 'initiate' any email. I only 'prompted' a further discussion with Mr. Forrest to test his motives"

  6. claiming "that I choose the picture of Jesus and the quote 'the bulls of Bashan' because I have a 'Messiah complex'"

  7. claiming "that Mr. Forrest left CAI because I was being 'hyper-critical of the pope,'"

  8. claiming "that Mr. Forrest did not put up an article on the CAI website that was unauthorized by me."

For someone so concerned about "censorship," Sungenis appears to have no problem refusing me my own rights to express my opinions, which is understandable - if you are Robert Sungenis and you operate according to a double-standard, that is. By way of brief digression, it seems appropriate to offer a few brief comments on these eight charges that Sungenis makes against me.

1) I published his private emails with Forrest's permission, and only because Sungenis falsely represented the information contained in those emails. It was necessary to put his actual words in public view in order to defend Forrest from Sungenis' libel.

2) I did not merely accuse Sungenis of "not reading Schoeman's book." I demonstrated, using his own words, that he critiqued Schoeman's book before he had read it. I am quite certain that he got around to reading the book eventually, but Forrest has supplied the proof, in the form of Sungenis' own confession, that he wrote a critique of Schoeman before he had read Schoeman's book. Why he continues to deny this when his own emails have been publicized and prove the contrary is beyond me. He wrote a 1,500-word "Letter to the Editor" and submitted it to Culture Wars in March of 2004, both critiquing Schoeman's theology in Salvation is from the Jews and accusing Schoeman of dishonesty in his use of patristics, before he had read the book. This is not an accusation so much as it is a statement of fact.

3) I did not deny that Forrest left CAI "in the midst of an engagement he was trying to arrange with a promoter." That would be a foolish thing to deny, in light of the fact that Forrest publicly divulged all of this information on his web site, before Sungenis had written a single word in response - that information is here, in a lengthy footnote to Forrest's piece. Permit me to quote the most relevant portion:

Then, in mid-late 2004 a series of events unfolded that led directly to my departure from CAI ... Fourth, I was invited to speak about traditional marriage at a public high school in Massachusetts.

... I had recently been invited to speak at a public high school in Massachusetts about traditional marriage (gratis) and I accepted. I thought it wise and prudent to be prepared with concrete, indisputable proof in case the anti-Christian liberals likely to crash such a presentation decided to try to discredit both me and defenders of traditional marriage by associating us with anti-Semitism. My name was posted all over the school. Any simple google search would reveal that I was associated with Catholic Apologetics International. And what had happened in 2002 at CAI was readily accessible as well.

After doing the research recounted above in this study, I recognized a dilemma in regard to my pending presentation at the public high school. I knew I could no longer honestly claim that Bob had retracted and apologized for the things he wrote in 2002. And if I was asked, "then why do you continue to support and work for him?", I also knew I could offer no satisfactory answer. Additionally, in light of the imminent threat to traditional marriage in Massachusetts, I felt it would be imprudent to endanger the nascent, beleaguered movement to protect it. It was almost miraculous that we had even been permitted to speak at public high school. And I could not reasonably contend that I found the views expressed by Bob to be serious and wrong while simultaneously publicly supporting and defending him. (Forrest, "Robert Sungenis and the Jews", Section 2, "Background", fn. 3)

All of this information has been publicly accessible since the day Forrest published his web site. Despite this fact, Sungenis wrote his hit piece on Forrest and publicly accused him of leaving CAI because of "his blossoming musical career", and so that "he could look good in the eyes of his concert promoter." (Sungenis, "Michael Forrest and the Jews", p. 8) That is what I denied, because it wasn't true. There was no concert promoter, there was no "gig" (a word Sungenis uses a total of 26 times in his attack on Forrest and in his unpublished attack on me), there was no "blossoming musical career" on the line. It was a public speaking engagement at a secular high school on the subject of traditional marriage, and all of this has been public information since Forrest published his web site, despite Sungenis' accusations that Forrest has been "hiding" this information. The fact of the matter is that Sungenis simply didn't read Forrest's piece before he launched his criticisms, which, as we have shown, is a recurring theme in Sungenis' rather spotty track record.

4) I did imply that Calamus International University has the earmarks of being a "diploma mill." It is a non-US-accredited institution without an on-site campus, based in the West Indies, with a "store front" in the UK. I think it smells fishy, and since Sungenis is so sensitive to issues of censorship, I am certain that he will agree I am entitled to my opinion on the matter.

5) I did claim that Sungenis took credit for "initiating" email contact with Forrest, and that is precisely what he did. Here are his words: "After a brief exchange of emails (which I prompted in order to test Forrest's real motives), Forrest wrote back ..." (Sungenis, "Forrest and the Jews", p. 3) Sungenis wants to make an issue out of the fact that he used the word "prompted," while I used the word "initiated." This is why he protests, "I didn't 'initiate' any email. I only 'prompted' a further discussion with Mr. Forrest to test his motives." I invite the reader to consult a thesaurus. He will find that the word "prompt" has several synonyms, including, "cause", "incite", "induce", and "instigate". Merriam-Webster's Dictionary gives as a primary meaning for "prompt" the following definition: "to move to action, to incite." But this is nothing more than a red herring anyway; that Sungenis wants to split hairs over two words that are synonymous in the face of all the other serious issues we have raised only further demonstrates the fact that he has missed the point entirely. The bigger issue here, though, is why he wants to take credit for "prompting" an email discussion specifically "to test Forrest's real motives" - in other words, admitting that he was not being forthright and fully honest in his discussions with Forrest. He was playing games, trying to bait Forrest, by his own admission.

6) I did claim that Sungenis has a Messiah complex. When a man applies a Messianic Psalm to himself, sticks a picture of Jesus next to his own written defense, refers to his one-time "best friend" as "Judas" for having "betrayed" him, and claims to be a prophet of God with a mission to protect the Church, even from the Pope, I am entitled to the opinion that this man has a serious Messiah complex. Further evidence of this fact is what Sungenis himself wrote in his attack against Forrest; not only did he apply the "bulls of Bashan" quote to himself, but he also said, "I am indeed within my Catholic prerogatives to advance this position without being crucified as 'biased' by Michael Forrest." (Sungenis, "Michael Forrest and the Jews", p. 47) The linkage between the verb ("crucified") and the adjective ("biased") doesn't even make sense grammatically; one can be "labeled" as biased, or "called" biased, or even "accused" of being biased, but to say one has been "crucified" as biased is awkward. Of all the possible verbs Sungenis could have used, he picked the one verb that is most obviously associated with Jesus Christ, even though the use of that verb doesn't make sense in the sentence. Why? Because he has a Messiah complex, perhaps?

7) I did claim that Forrest left CAI because Sungenis was being too critical ("hyper-critical") of the Pope, as well as because Sungenis was saying some disturbing things about the Jews. Those were two very important reasons that factored into Forrest's decision to leave CAI. If we must get technical, the final straw, according to Forrest, was when he raised these issues with Sungenis, and Sungenis' response was "that's your problem." The claim is correct, and is mentioned in the footnote to Forrest's piece quoted above.

8) I never denied that Forrest "put up" an article on CAI that was unauthorized by Sungenis, although here again Sungenis is being sloppy with his language: Forrest "put up" nothing on the web site, because he didn't have the site passwords that would even allow him to do so. He asked the web master to "put up" a notice - not an "article" - that CAI's prayers were with the dying pontiff, John Paul II. The text of this "article" is as follows:

To all of our patrons, We ask that you fervently pray for the Holy Father, for his health, for his soul and that God's will be done. He has suffered greatly and has been a witness in his suffering against a world that views life as disposable. He has returned to the hospital once again.

Thank you,

Robert Sungenis, Michael Forrest, Patrick Morris, Ben Douglass, John Novotny and Maureen Sungenis

That Sungenis calls this "underhanded activity" says a lot more about Sungenis than it does about Forrest; yes, of course, how dare Forrest publish anything at CAI expressing love and prayers for the Holy Father! What an underhanded thing to do at a Catholic web site! Notice, though, that Sungenis has once again quietly softened his accusation. Here he uses the phrase "Mr. Forrest ... put up an article on the CAI website that was unauthorized by me." Compare that to Sungenis' previous accusation, published on his web site:

One day Michael's concert promoter told Michael that he would not hire him to play in the concert because of his association with CAI and because of some of the "Jewish" articles on our website. To rectify this situation, Michael rearranged our website, without telling me, so that the "offending" material no longer appeared, since he knew that his concert promoter was going to be checking our website ... now that a music gig was on the line, Michael didn't want [his promoter] to see certain articles ... (Sungenis, "Forrest and the Jews", p. 7, emphasis added)

Is there anything in this accusation that even remotely corresponds to the truth? Is there anything here about Michael putting up a prayer for the Pope? On the contrary, here Sungenis claims that Forrest rearranged the web site, specifically by removing articles from the site so that his imaginary "concert promoter" wouldn't see those articles (again, there was no "concert promoter" and no musical "gig," it was a speaking engagement at a secular high school - the obvious question here is why a secular high school would care if Forrest was associated with a web site that was overly critical of the Pope, as Sungenis insists on claiming). Sungenis can't even get the most basic facts right here, and he accuses Forrest of doing something that Forrest never even had the capability to do - and now Sungenis wants me to publicly apologize? I have a better suggestion, but it rather goes without saying.

Obviously, Sungenis' accusation and subsequent insinuation that Forrest was involved in underhanded activity is ridiculous, but what about his insinuation that Forrest was not "authorized" to put articles up on the site? The reader is asked to consider the following: Forrest sent this short statement to then-CAI webmaster John Novotny with a request to post it, and Novotny complied. This fact alone presents us with an interesting point: if Novotny were a truly loyal associate of Sungenis and CAI, he should have rejected Forrest's request, or at the very least, instructed Forrest to get Sungenis' "authorization" first. That he did no such thing, but promptly posted Forrest's piece without blinking an eye, leaves us with basically two explanations: either Forrest did have implicit and on-going "authorization" to make such requests (and this authority was recognized by CAI's webmaster), and thus Sungenis is exaggerating his charge just slightly, or John Novotny has been in collusion with Forrest and assisting him in his underhanded activities since 2005. In any event, the question is raised: why didn't Sungenis "terminate" John Novotny as well? After all, Forrest merely put in the request for the prayer/statement to be posted; it was Novotny who actually posted it. The conclusion is plain: Sungenis is blowing smoke and waving more red herrings here in his attempt to justify his continued evasion of responsibility for his own actions. It is always someone else's fault in Sungenis' ego-centered universe (Galileo Was Wrong indeed!), even when laying the blame on someone else only exposes further inconsistencies.

In summary, then, Sungenis systematically rejected the terms of an agreement that his own VP suggested - terms which he initially accepted, mind you - as part of an agreement that he himself authorized; in turn, he issued a completely different set of terms which bind no one but myself and Forrest. It would be difficult to imagine a more one-sided agreement!

Suffice it to say, then, that the attempted negotiations ended in utter failure as soon as Sungenis got involved. Even his own VP seemed confounded by him. We can only scratch our heads at why he even bothered to authorize Douglass to negotiate with Forrest in the first place, when it is clear now that he never had any intention of abiding by the proposal that Douglass initially offered. A more honest response would have been to simply tell Douglass from the start that his proposal was unacceptable; instead, Sungenis chose to play a game, waste the time of both Forrest and Douglass, and buy himself a few days of peace and quiet by getting us to remove our public criticisms of his work. We are left with two explanations here, one of which calls into question his moral fiber, and the other which raises questions about his emotional and psychological stability.

Since Sungenis has seen fit to lead Mr. Forrest and myself down a rabbit trail, only to lash out at us once again just when we had agreed to try to work things out, we have no other choice but to re-post our criticisms. Unfortunately for Sungenis, we must now add to those criticisms this most recent round of hanky-panky. It appears clear that this entire attempt at negotiation was little more than a charade, a bargaining chip that was used to get Forrest to pull down his web site for as long as possible.

For whatever reason, Sungenis seems intent on burying himself with his own admissions and arguments, and there appears to be little that we or anyone else can do to stop him. Most illustrative of this point is the final communique from Douglass:

I'm not sure what we could accomplish by talking more. I tried to convince Robert that a compromise is the prudent thing to do, but he disagrees, and I'm not going to change his mind. I think the best you can get is what he's already promised. No more articles on Judaism in the forseeable [sic] future as he works on the study Bible, some editing in the articles already at CAI on Judaism, and more caution and sensitivity in answering questions in the future. (Douglass, email of Oct. 6, 2006)

Even Sungenis' VP of Apologetics recognizes that Sungenis is being imprudent, but does that make a bit of difference to Sungenis? No. How quickly do men that Sungenis deems to be incredibly bright, trustworthy and honest mutate into naive dimwits at best, or agents of Satan at worst. This is a long-established pattern at CAI and current CAI volunteers would do well to take careful notice of it.

As was shown in my first defense of Forrest, Sungenis believes himself to be a prophet of God with a Divine mandate, and he has made it clear with his own words that he will sacrifice even his friendships in order to fulfill his mission. Forrest couldn't convince him, and Douglass won't be able to either. However, while Sungenis may think himself to be a prophet, the way in which he continues to implicate himself with his own words, and his obvious blindness to the fact that he only gets himself in a little deeper every time he launches another 70-page missive, makes one wonder if perhaps a comparison between Sungenis and Pharaoh may not be a little closer to the mark.

At this point, there is not a single individual who contributed to Forrest's piece who believes there is any point in further negotiations with Sungenis. He has proven himself to be disingenuous and self-centered to a degree that makes it impossible to reach him, or bring him out of his delusions. He has taken his stand and is bent on defending it at all costs. As such, it is now necessary to refocus our attention on those for whose benefit Forrest first published his original piece: the innocent people who may be harmed by Sungenis' propaganda and animus. For their sake, further information must of necessity soon be forthcoming, and will be published on this web site, about this false prophet who represents no one but himself - information that until now has been held back in the hope that Sungenis might not harden his heart yet again, and refuse to hear the pleas of his brothers. After all is said and done, others will at least have the information necessary to protect themselves from the virus Sungenis spreads like typhoid Mary.
